Monday, August 20, 2007 Enriquez subs for Lopez in University Run WHEN Mendel Lopez failed to win a title for the University of Southern Philippines Foundation, there was Reiz Enriquez to cover for him. Enriquez dominated the premier Men’s Open division of the University Run 2007 yesterday at the new campus of the Cebu Doctors’ University at the Mandaue Reclamation Area. Enriquez finished the 13-kilometer race course in 46 minutes and 50 seconds, putting an end to Lopez’s reign on the road. Lopez, who just won the Cebu leg title of Milo Marathon, skipped last Sunday’s race. Coming in second was Adonis Singson, who checked into the finish line two seconds later. Rafrenal Banzon settled for third place with a time of 48.20. While Lopez is taking a breather, his counterpart in the distaff side, Liezel Gitaruelas has no intentions of stopping. After an explosive exploit in the Milo Marathon, which marked her 10th title for the year, Gitaruelas continued her winning streak as she won the Women’s title emphatically. Gitaruelas breasted the tape in 57.28 minutes to win the title. Malaysia-bound Merlita Arias, who clocked in one hour and 27 seconds, took second place while Madelyn Carter finished at third place with a time of 1:02. The top three winners received cash prizes of P3,000, P2,500 and P2,000, respectively. Results of the other divisions of the annual race were not not made available by the race officials at press time yesterday. In the other contests, Sanday’s Runners won the biggest delegation award, overshadowing three-time winner Timex Runners Club. On the other hand, the trainees and officers of the Philippine National Police won the liveliest group award as they chanted in unison while they run. The fun run, whose proceeds will go to the Cebu Cataract Foundation, is organized in time for the school’s university week this August. (MCB)
