Davao City's Elmer Bartolo and Surigao's Madelyn Carter ruled Sunday’s 3rd Run for Sight-Cebu Doctor's University (CDU) Run, which started and ended at the CDU campus at the North Reclamation Area in Mandaue City. Both took advantage of the absence of top runners in their divisions to wrest their respective crowns. Bartolo took home the 10K men's open title, while Carter pocketed the women's open tiara. Bartolo finished the race in 32 minutes and 20.890 seconds while Carter did it in 41:48.560. Leszl Gitaruelas, last year’s women’s open champion, is still in Sabah, Malaysia for the Mt. Kinabalu Mountain Run. Defending men’s open champion Riez Enriquez, on the other hand, opted not to run this year to prepare for the Milo Marathon in Bohol this September 7. “Even from the start, I was confident to win the race because other runners were an arm-stretch behind me” Bartolo said, who also topped this year's Sinulog 21K Run and Kapamilya 10K Run.
On the other hand, Carter was delighted with her victory, saying that it took her three tries before finally winning the crown. “I finished fourth in the first Run for Sight in 2006 then third last year,” she said. Bartolo was followed by Southwestern University runners Philip Duenas (32:55:480) and Ian Bernido (33:05:270), respectively. Carter’s runners-up were Miscell Gerbeyna (42:35:430) and Christy Sevilleno (43:12:780). Getting better Meanwhile, Dr. Yong Larrazabal dominated the men’s category of the Doctor's 10K run, finishing with his best time so far in the division. He has won this division for three straight years but considers this his best for finishing the race in 45 minutes. “In 2006, I finished the race in 52 minutes. Last year I did it in 49 minutes,” he said. Trailing Dr. Larrazabal were Dr. Glenn Cang (47:30:960) and Dr. Vicente Verallo (5O:39:060), respectively. Dr. Emily Estrada topped the Doctors 10K women’s category followed by Dr. Susan Trani with and Dr. Nicole Chua. In the 5K men's division, Alberto Biagan finished first (19:42:304), while Christopher Alota and Lindsey Gantiongco wound up second and third, respectively. Hannah Hortelano landed at first place in the women’s side followed by Marie Mantus and Anna Mae Go. The employees 10K men’s division crown went to Anancio Postrero, while Roger Nadela and Charlie Bernedo were his runners-up. Mary Grace Bautista finished first in the women’s division. Dr. Larrazabal was overwhelmed with this year's race and considered it one of Cebu's premiere and prestigious races. He credited the efforts of CDU student volunteers, the Sports and Fitness Enthusiast (SAFE) group headed by Joel Baring and the Cebu Executives Runner Club of Raffy Uytiepo for the success of the race, which was sponsored by Sun Cellular. |
